About the job:

The Senior Accountant, reporting to the Director of Finance, is tasked with preparing, reviewing, and analyzing monthly and annual financial statements for multiple facilities in line with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

Key responsibilities include performing revenue, expense, and FTE budget variance analysis. Additional duties involve maintaining accurate and timely general ledger account reconciliations, daily cash reporting, preparation of audit work papers, monitoring capital leases and debt obligations, recording journal entries, and managing fixed assets.

The role requires direct interaction with internal and external auditors to provide necessary documentation. The Senior Accountant also assists with annual operating and capital budgets, tax return preparations, financial surveys, and other financial reporting requirements. Acting as a liaison with facility department heads, the Senior Accountant ensures timely resolution of finance-related issues.

Oversight and direction are provided to the Staff Accountant, including the review and approval of all journal entries, work papers, and financial analyses.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare, review, and analyze multiple monthly and annual financial statements.
  • Participate in month-end financial close review meetings within the timeframe set by the Director of Finance and Senior Management.
  • Maintain and ensure the integrity of all general ledger accounts, including those related to Joint Ventures.
  • Supervise daily activities and approve all work-papers completed by Staff Accountants.
  • Maintain accurate and timely general ledger and balance sheet audit worksheets for review.
  • Book monthly journal entries, both recurring and non-routine.
  • Assist the Director of Finance in coordinating various functions of the Accounting Department.
  • Handle internal and external reporting, including financial surveys, IRS forms, pools, and cash receipts assessments.
  • Assist in annual budget and ICR preparation as needed.
  • Compile supporting schedules for annual tax returns (990s, 1120s, and CHAR500s) and ensure timely compliance and filing.
  • Act as a liaison with outside audit firms, providing all requested documentation for various audits.
  • Analyze monthly expense and FTE budget variances.
  • Monitor capital leases and facility debt obligations, reconciling related long-term and short-term liability accounts.
  • Prepare and update schedules of Property, Plant, and Equipment acquisitions, disposals, and estimated depreciation calculations monthly.
  • Maintain effective communication with hospital departments to address finance-related issues.
  • Refer unresolved matters to management as appropriate.
  • Maintain facility financial information systems (Kreg BUD, AllScripts, and Sage).
  • Recommend and develop processes to streamline financial operations.
  • Handle annual filing of NYS Unclaimed Funds submissions and research unclaimed funds due to all HealthAlliance facilities.
  • Reconcile cash receipts/disbursements daily, verifying against the General Ledger and bank support.
  • Prepare weekly cash disbursement outflow reports for cash reporting.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

EXPERIENCE:

  • Solid accounting background, with prior experience in a healthcare setting preferred.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting preferred.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Access, and Outlook.

OTHER

  • Strong financial analysis skills, the ability to prioritize and multitask, and excellent organizational and communication skills.
